For years we struggled to keep deer out of our garden. No matter what we did, we could not prevent them from making meals out of our tomatoes and the vegetables we were growing. As frustrating as it is to not be able to enjoy your own crop, we were also losing the time we put into our garden and the money we put into our plants. It wasn’t until we tried the ScareCrow Motion Activated Sprinkler that we were able to keep deer out of our garden.
I tried a few different solutions that were recommended to me by various friends, neighbors, and sales associates at the hardware store. I tried placing some netting on the ground as well as wire around the garden. This did nothing to prevent them from entering.
Next I tried chemical solutions. You might have seen them advertised as “deer-b-gone”. They are touted as organic deer repellants. I had a little bit of luck with this method, but this was outweighed by the negatives. For one, this stuff washes away very easily. Combine that with the cost, and it can really get expensive to go the chemical repellant route. Not to mention, the stuff stinks… literally… the smell is awful.
Finally I was introduced to the ScareCrow Motion Activated Sprinkler by my brother in law. We were visiting, chatting it up, started talking about gardens. I mentioned my problems and he told me about this system. I thought it was a joke and was sure that this contraption would not work.
So we took a walk out back. Now, Joe never actually told me he installed the ScareCrow sprinkler.
So we are walking out back, he tells me he has to run inside and grab the phone and to go ahead and check out his tomato plants. So I walk over and BAM… that’s right, I got a quick shower thanks to the ScareCrow. I was sold right then and there.
A little research helped me determine that two ScareCrows would work perfect for me. I haven’t had a problem with deer in my garden since setting them up. And the set up was simple. Stick the spike in the ground, attach the hose and sprinkler, done. My 8 year old set up the 2nd one.
Are there any drawbacks? Well, it can only cover a limited area, so you might need two or more of these to cover your yard. This depends on your space requirements. Also, if you are like me, you will forget it is there and fail to cut off the water supply before heading out to the garden. I can tell you this, it is just as shocking the tenth time as it was the first time.
If you like to play practical jokes, then the ScareCrow Sprinkler is great as no one is expecting that blast of water.
Any additional benefits? Yes… neighborhood pets no longer enter my backyard. The ScareCrow has been very effective at keeping dogs and cats from using my lawn as their toilet. This is a great added benefit and one that I had not initially considered when setting the sprinkler up.
Does the ScareCrow Motion Activated Sprinkler harm animals? No, absolutely not. I feel better using this than any other solution. There is nothing inhumane about this system. The water burst is startling, not painful. You don’t have to worry about adverse effects to the environment or any animals that come across.
So, if you are having a problem with deer in your garden, or any other pest in your backyard, the ScareCrow Sprinkler is highly recommended. This really is the only solution you will ever need.
